ABOUT & FAQ FOR BRT

British Regions Tournament (BRT) is corporately administered by the non-profit BRT Pool Ltd (Company No. 17510307, registered in England and Wales). Sporting operations are managed by the BRT Council.

BRT is now entering its fifth consecutive season. Founded in June 2022 by long-time student Steff Llewellyn, assisted by a handful of volunteers from across the UK, the central idea was for a university-based 8-ball pool competition of a format that did not exist in university cuesports at that time, namely that of region vs region in contrast to university vs university. The addition of regional trials to qualify for the regional team was also incorporated. Back then, BRT consisted of six regions: the Southeast, Wales & the Southwest, the Midlands, the Northeast, the Northwest and Scotland

In the 2024-25 season, BRT gained in a new region with Ireland, making seven total, and in the Summer of 2025 the addition of a new individuals-focused event called Summer Singles

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are a list of commonly asked questions. These may contain answers to any queries you have. If you are still unsure about something, use the Contact Us page

For a list of institutions in your region, see the interactive map at the bottom of this page

Eligibility & Trials

Q: How do I know what region my University, or former University, belongs to? A: First, see if your institution is listed in the interactive map at the bottom of the About page. If not and you're still unsure, get in touch using the Contact Us page. Most universities are fairly self-explanatory but BRT uses a custom allocation system in an attempt to ensure fair representation in each region.

Q: What are the eligibility criteria for entering the trials? A: For students, if you are an active student as of the 1st October, you are considered as a student for that entire season/academic year. Typically, we are satisfied with a student ID card or course end date that expires on the 2nd of October or later, even if you may have graduated that prior Summer. For alumni, proof that you attended a University is sufficient for eligibility purposes. This can be an expired student ID card, institutional email proof or even a graduation certificate.

Q: Are all Universities eligible for BRT? A: We accept any institution listed on the BUCS list of eligible institutions, this can be found on the BUCS Play app when searching for sporting communities. For the Republic of Ireland, institutions eligible with Student Sport Ireland and eligible to participate in the Irish Intervarsities Pool Championships are accepted. The interactive map at the bottom of the About page can also be used for these purposes. If in doubt, get in touch via the Contact Us page.

Q: How do I enter the trials for my region? A: You should contact the Regional Director for your region to register your interest in attending the trials, see the Contact Us page for the email address of each RD.

Q: Is there a skill threshold to enter the trials? A: Generally, everyone who applies for trials is able to participate. However, in the case of high interest, a Regional Director may impose some restrictions. Your RD may inquire in this regard when you apply to enter.

Q: Is there a dress code for trials? A: Trials are typically fairly relaxed in this regard but a Regional Director may impose an appropriate dress code if desired.

Q: What is the format of the trials? A: The format of the trials may vary by region. They typically involve multiple matches of race-to-2 or race-to-3, or even single-frame matches with many more rounds. This information may be given in the trials announcement posts towards the beginning of each season.

Q: What is the entry fee for trials? A: The entry fee typically ranges between £10-15pp, this will be specified in the trials announcement posts towards the start of the season.

Q: How do I know if I have been successful in qualifying for the Main Event? A: Your Regional Director may be able to give you informal confirmation of your status during the trials. However, official confirmation is given with the publication of the Team Sheets after all the trials have finished, typically early-mid December.

Q: Can I enter the trials for multiple regions in the same season if I have attended University in those regions at some point? A: You will need to decide which eligible region you wish to play for that academic year and enter trials, or be an autopick, for that region. Once committed, you cannot change until the following season.

Q: What are autopicks? A: Autopicks are players that have been deemed by their Regional Director to be of sufficient skill to bypass the trials process and go directly into the team. There are limited autopick positions in each team.

Q: What can I do if I think my regional trials have been conducted very unfairly? A: If you would like to register a complaint or report on a serious issue with your trials, please contact the BRT Council using the Contact Us page.

Q: What are the regional colours and logos? A: The colours for each region are: blue (Scotland); navy (Northeast); orange/copper (Northwest); mint green (Midlands); red (Wales & Southwest); yellow/gold (Southeast); emerald green (Ireland). Regional logos can be found at the bottom of the Contact page.

Q: What is the format of the Main Event? A: The Main Event is primarily a team event that runs similar to county format. Multiple sets of single frame pool per match, with a round robin group stage followed by knockouts on the final day. Additionally, there is an MVP competition that sometimes also has a knockout component.

Q: Is there a dress code for the Main Event? A: Yes, the full dress code can be found using the link at the bottom of the website. Formal black trousers (optional knee-length black skirt for women), formal black shoes, BRT playing top or collared shirt in the regional colour.

Q: What rule set is the Main Event? A: As of 2025-26, BRT operates under International Rules and is unlikely to change unless the main national English pool bodies also change rule set.

BRT Summer Singles

Q: What is BRT Summer Singles? A: BRT Summer Singles began in 2025 and is primarily an individuals-focused event. Priority entry is given to Main Event participants (potentially in order of merit), then trialists and then direct entries, if applicable. It typically takes place in July or August.

Q: How can I enter BRT Summer Singles? A: The best way of ensuring access to entry into BRT Summer Singles is to enter trials, qualify for the relevant regional team and participate in the Main Event (and ideally do well!). If the event is filled by Main Event participants alone, unsuccessful trialists won't be able to enter.

Q: Where is the BRT Summer Singles event held? A: Typically it would be at the same venue that hosted the Main Event that year, if not, it will take place in an equivalent centrally located venue.

Q: Is BRT Summer Singles separated by category, like the main event? A: A-Team players at the main event, or that trialed successfully for the A-Team, enter the Championship, B-Team players/trialists enter the Trophy and women players enter the Women's/Ladies competition. Players may be promoted from one team to another if required and the player agrees, but players cannot be demoted. Some Summer Singles events may further separate into different student and alumni competitions.
